Hardwood floor refinishing in Colorado Springs

Scratched, gray or sun faded wood sanded back to bare and finished in three coats. Most floors come back. Plenty come back looking better than new.

When it is time

Signs your floor needs a sand.

A floor does not have to be ruined to need refinishing. These are the reasons people usually call:

  • Wear stains in the walkways and in front of the sink
  • Too long between maintenance coats
  • Scratches and blemishes too deep to buff out
  • Cleaning products that dulled or clouded the finish
  • Sun fading that left light and dark patches

Three days, three coats

How a refinish runs.

Most sand and refinish jobs take three days because three applications go on the floor. The wood is sanded to bare, then gets one coat of seal or stain, then two full strength coats of finish, each with time to dry.

Want a new color? Stain goes onto bare wood, so a refinish is the moment to go darker, lighter or back to natural.

Under the carpet

Old wood tends to be good wood.

Pulling up carpet in an older Colorado Springs house often turns up oak or fir that has been protected for decades. Tack strip holes, staples and stains mostly sand out, and the boards underneath can look like they were laid last month.

“They did an amazing job making very old floors look like new.”

About the dust

Sanding is dusty. We keep it contained.

We hang plastic to close off the work area wherever we can, and our sanders run built in vacuums and dust bags that catch most of the dust. Open lofts and vaulted ceilings are harder to seal off, so we go over those with you before we start.

Afterward

Keeping the new finish new.

  1. Sweep often

A soft broom or vacuum keeps grit from scratching the finish.

  2. Wipe spills fast

Standing water and pet accidents are what get into the wood.

  3. Use rugs in traffic lanes

Entries, the kitchen sink and the path to the back door wear first.

  4. Move things around

Shifting rugs and furniture now and then keeps sun fading even.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

How long does refinishing take?

In most cases three days. There are three applications on the floor: one coat of seal or stain on the bare wood, then two full strength coats of finish.

How dusty is sanding?

Sanding is a dusty job by nature. We put up plastic wherever possible and our machines have built in vacuums and dust bags that capture the majority of it. Vaulted ceilings and open lofts limit how much can be sealed off.

What causes sun fading, and can I prevent it?

Most discoloration comes from sunlight, and finishes also change with age. Moving area rugs and furniture regularly keeps the contrast between sunny and shaded areas to a minimum.
